Day 2: The Lake of Dreams

After a sumptuous breakfast at Stock Food & Drink in the hotel, we headed for Lake Louise. The kids had seen pictures, but they were awestruck by its in-person splendor. Day 4: Trails and Tales

Today was for hiking. Tom is an avid hiker and was itching to explore. We opted for an easier trail given the kids’ ages. We chose Johnston Canyon, a fairly simple hike leading to some beautiful waterfalls. The kids loved the smaller falls and pools where they could throw pebbles.

In the evening, we strolled along Banff Avenue. The kids picked out souvenirs, and I found a lovely boutique—The Spirit of Christmas—for some unique Christmas ornaments.

Day 5: Of Snow and Farewells

Although it was summer, the higher elevations still had snow. We took the kids to Sunshine Meadows. Seeing them play in the snow, throw snowballs, and make snow angels was like reliving my own childhood. We had lunch at the Sunshine Mountain Lodge, where the kids devoured their burgers, and Tom and I enjoyed the local trout.

As we drove back to Calgary for our return flight, each one of us was silent, lost in our thoughts, absorbing the final views of the Rockies. This trip was not just a celebration of my 40th birthday; it felt like a celebration of life, of family, of the sheer magnificence of nature that we too often take for granted.

Banff has given me a birthday and a vacation that I’ll cherish for life.
