Hello! I’m Sophia, and I’m thrilled to share the journal of our unforgettable family vacation in Banff, where we celebrated my milestone 40th birthday. I’ve put together a comprehensive account of our adventures—from the natural wonders we explored to the snug accommodations that became our home away from home. My husband Tom and our kids have also chipped in with their impressions. To keep things straightforward, we’ve structured it as ‘Day 1, Day 2, and so on, but just to clarify, this was our incredible summer getaway. Ready to embark on this journey with us? Let’s go!
Day 1: Arrival and the “Castle in the Rockies”
Today, we touched down at Calgary International Airport. The kids were bursting with excitement as we picked up our rental car for the 90-minute drive to Banff. The ride itself was a prelude to the natural spectacle we were about to witness; the mountains seemed to grow with every mile.
We checked into the Fairmont Banff Springs, fondly known as the “Castle in the Rockies.” I’ve always wanted to stay here, and what better occasion than my 40th birthday? My husband, Tom, had secretly booked a suite with a mountain view. It was beautiful.
Day 2: The Lake of Dreams
After a sumptuous breakfast at Stock Food & Drink in the hotel, we headed for Lake Louise. The kids had seen pictures, but they were awestruck by its in-person splendor. The lake’s turquoise waters seemed almost surreal. We rented canoes and spent a couple of hours on the lake. Tom and I relished the serenity while the kids couldn’t stop giggling and splashing their paddles.
Day 3: Gondolas and Birthdays
It’s my 40th birthday, hurray. The day started with a surprise breakfast-in-bed arranged by Tom and the kids. Post-breakfast, we headed for the Banff Gondola. The kids loved the ride up Sulphur Mountain. At the top, we were treated to panoramic views that photos can never do justice to. Tom, a photography enthusiast, was in paradise.
For dinner, Tom had made reservations at Eden at The Rimrock. It was a five-diamond experience with a five-star view. The kids were remarkably well-behaved, probably subdued by the majestic surroundings. As we indulged in fine dining, the staff brought out a cake, and my family sang “Happy Birthday” to me. It was a perfect end to the day.
Day 4: Trails and Tales
Today was for hiking. Tom is an avid hiker and was itching to explore. We opted for an easier trail given the kids’ ages. We chose Johnston Canyon, a fairly simple hike leading to some beautiful waterfalls. The kids loved the smaller falls and pools where they could throw pebbles.
In the evening, we strolled along Banff Avenue. The kids picked out souvenirs, and I found a lovely boutique—The Spirit of Christmas—for some unique Christmas ornaments.
Day 5: Of Snow and Farewells
Although it was summer, the higher elevations still had snow. We took the kids to Sunshine Meadows. Seeing them play in the snow, throw snowballs, and make snow angels was like reliving my own childhood. We had lunch at the Sunshine Mountain Lodge, where the kids devoured their burgers, and Tom and I enjoyed the local trout.
As we drove back to Calgary for our return flight, each one of us was silent, lost in our thoughts, absorbing the final views of the Rockies. This trip was not just a celebration of my 40th birthday; it felt like a celebration of life, of family, of the sheer magnificence of nature that we too often take for granted.
Banff has given me a birthday and a vacation that I’ll cherish for life. The kids enjoyed their adventurous outings, Tom got his dose of nature and photography, and I got the most memorable 40th birthday I could have wished for. This place and this trip will forever hold a special place in all our hearts.
And so ends our Banff tale. Can’t wait to see where life takes us next!
Sophia.

Tom’s Perspective
Hey folks, I’m Tom. You might have come across my incredible wife Sophia’s journal detailing our family’s adventures in Banff for her 40th birthday. But as they say, there’s two sides to every coin. So, I wanted to share my perspective on this unforgettable trip, one that melded our family closer than ever before. Ready? Let’s jump in.
Day 1: The Arrival and the Castle in the Rockies
I wanted to surprise Sophia with something special, so I booked us a suite at the Fairmont Banff Springs or as it’s colloquially called, the “Castle in the Rockies.” When she walked in and saw the mountain views from our window, the look on her face was priceless—just as breathtaking as the landscape itself.
Day 2: Canoeing at the Lake of Dreams
Sophia has always been drawn to water, perhaps because it mirrors her own tranquility and depth. Lake Louise did not disappoint. Renting canoes there was probably the best decision I’ve made. While the kids splashed and giggled, Sophia and I shared a moment of serenity on the water. I’ll never forget the way she looked, her face lit by the shimmering turquoise of the lake.
Day 3: The Milestone and the Mountain Top
Today was the big day—Sophia’s 40th. We started the morning with breakfast in bed, kids eagerly watching their mom open small gifts. Then we took the Banff Gondola up to Sulphur Mountain. Up there, amidst panoramic views, I looked at Sophia and thought, “This is what 40 looks like, and it’s beautiful.” We capped the evening with dinner at Eden at The Rimrock. The staff brought out a birthday cake and the look on Sophia’s face? Well, let’s just say it rivalled the surrounding grandeur.
Day 4: Discoveries Along Johnston Canyon
I love hiking, so a trip to Banff would be incomplete without hitting a trail or two. We chose Johnston Canyon, a family-friendly option. What I loved most was watching Sophia’s face light up at each waterfall, each natural wonder. And the kids, oh they had a blast, throwing pebbles into the pools.
Day 5: Snow Angels in July
For our final day, we ventured up to Sunshine Meadows. Sophia and I watched as the kids played in the snow, their laughter echoing in the crisp mountain air. As we had lunch at Sunshine Mountain Lodge, I realized that these are the moments that make life beautiful.
As we drove back to Calgary, a silence fell over the car. It wasn’t a sad silence, but rather the kind that comes when everyone is collectively soaking in the last precious moments of an extraordinary time.
So there you have it, my side of the Banff tale. Sophia has her story, rich with emotion and lovely details, and here’s mine, a simple recollection from a man blessed to witness the people he loves most discover joy in the simplest and grandest of things.
