The kids were bursting with excitement as we picked up our rental car for the 90-minute drive to Banff. The ride itself was a prelude to the natural spectacle we were about to witness; the mountains seemed to grow with every mile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We checked into the Fairmont Banff Springs, fondly known as the &#8220;Castle in the Rockies.&#8221; I&#8217;ve always wanted to stay here, and what better occasion than my 40th birthday? Tom and I relished the serenity while the kids couldn&#8217;t stop giggling and splashing their paddles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Day 3: Gondolas and Birthdays<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s my 40th birthday, hurray. The day started with a surprise breakfast-in-bed arranged by Tom and the kids. Post-breakfast, we headed for the Banff Gondola. The kids loved the ride up Sulphur Mountain. At the top, we were treated to panoramic views that photos can never do justice to. Tom, a photography enthusiast, was in paradise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For dinner, Tom had made reservations at Eden at The Rimrock. It was a five-diamond experience with a five-star view. The kids were remarkably well-behaved, probably subdued by the majestic surroundings. As we indulged in fine dining, the staff brought out a cake, and my family sang &#8220;Happy Birthday&#8221; to me. It was a perfect end to the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Day 4: Trails and Tales<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today was for hiking. Tom is an avid hiker and was itching to explore. We opted for an easier trail given the kids\u2019 ages. We chose Johnston Canyon, a fairly simple hike leading to some beautiful waterfalls. The kids loved the smaller falls and pools where they could throw pebbles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the evening, we strolled along Banff Avenue. The kids picked out souvenirs, and I found a lovely boutique\u2014The Spirit of Christmas\u2014for some unique Christmas ornaments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Day 5: Of Snow and Farewells<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although it was summer, the higher elevations still had snow. We took the kids to Sunshine Meadows. Seeing them play in the snow, throw snowballs, and make snow angels was like reliving my own childhood. We had lunch at the Sunshine Mountain Lodge, where the kids devoured their burgers, and Tom and I enjoyed the local trout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we drove back to Calgary for our return flight, each one of us was silent, lost in our thoughts, absorbing the final views of the Rockies.
