Duckett<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/zmanmekomi.com\/en\/tag\/a-personal-travel-guide-to-israel\/\">A Personal Travel Guide To Israel &#8211; Find all the chapters here<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span class=\"dropcap dropcap-simple\">O<\/span>bviously, try to pack conservatively for a long trip, and if you do forget something, it is easy to buy it in Israel (though prices may be higher). \u00a0Airlines are now charging a lot for baggage in excess of the weight limits, so beware! That said, I confess that I\u2019m a congenital excess packer\u2014but even I got it down to 42 lbs.\/20 kg on a two-week spring trip. \u00a0If I can do it, you can! Some can even do carry-on only; I cannot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even in the summer, do not pack too many pairs of shorts\u2014at most holy places neither women nor men can gain admittance in shorts. \u00a0Overall Israelis wear shorts less often than Americans, particularly women. Shorts are fine outside of religious sites, but the shorts-and-sneakers look may identify you as American if you care about that. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a recent trip, I showed up looking like that, and a dear Israeli friend asked\u2014with a smile\u2014\u201cCould you look any more American?!\u201d <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On days when you will be touring religious sites, legs and shoulders <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">must<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> be covered, for both men and women. \u00a0For women, that means skirts or dresses below the knee or long slacks are required, especially at Muslim sites. \u00a0A shawl or light shirt or jacket that can be thrown over a sleeveless blouse or dress will also work. Capris are fine if they go to at least mid-calf. \u00a0For men at religious sites, wear long pants and shirts that cover shoulders and upper arms (such as a polo shirt). But in secular areas, less conservative attire is perfectly fine. <strong>In Tel Aviv, almost anything goes!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t pack formal clothes unless you know you need them for some reason, say a very formal business function. \u00a0Israelis tend to dress quite informally, though consciously and with style. (I\u2019m reminded of David Sedaris\u2019s wry aside that \u201cAmericans would be respected more abroad if they didn\u2019t go out looking like they were out to cut the grass.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_200423\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-200423\" style=\"width: 860px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-200423\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/zmanmekomi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/669521582_51da713917_b-e1549387442236.jpg?resize=860%2C645&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"860\" height=\"645\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-200423\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Breslov kids prepare for Shabbat. Some rights reserved by yoav elad<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I usually pack one dress shirt and maybe one tie, just in case, but never a suit or sport coat. Even at the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, I felt just fine in nice pants and a dressier shirt, and some members of the audience dressed far less formally than that! \u00a0I have never needed more formal clothes at a restaurant, and I often eat at upscale places. A nice shirt with slacks or a skirt or dress will serve you anywhere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Men will need to cover their heads when entering a Jewish holy site, either with a hat or a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kippa<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, also called a skullcap (English) or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yarmulke<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Yiddish). \u00a0This is true whether or not the men are Jewish. Cardboard ones are always available, but those are really tacky. \u00a0You can buy an inexpensive <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kippa<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the street in Jerusalem, so even if you\u2019re not Jewish, pick one up. \u00a0But a ball cap or other hat is adequate; men simply need to cover their heads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a92004-2019 Douglas E.
